Overcoming Bitterness with Love

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.  Ephesians 4:31-32

Bitterness is a poison that will enter your mind, body, and soul,  it will always have ill effects on your person, changing who you are, and messing with who you are supposed to be.   Once the “root” of bitterness takes hold of you administering its venom, it does not want to let go, because it knows it can kill you.  Yes, bitterness is established within us in many forms, from physical complications, mental illnesses, to the very heart of our spirits, and yes, it can kill you if you allow it to.  It is a demon that prowls looking for those it can devour with its bite.  So, we ask the question:  How is it that God allows bitterness to make its way into our lives?  Is there a way to take care of this?

God does not allow this evil, because we chose free will and to live in sin. Yes, God created us with free will for a purpose, but the devil has done a good job putting fear and evil into our minds to deceive us and turn us away from what God has planned for our lives.  Bitterness brings the biggest enemy with it into our lives and that is FEAR.  Just like fear, you can choose to allow bitterness to control your life or not to control your life.  But once you fear it, the poison starts to spread.

There are many people, Christian and non-Christian, that are hurtful towards us by what they do or say, it is our choice whether or not we will become bitter.  We need to learn what God has taught us to do, that is to forgive and forget what they have done.  Most of these people do want to show love but just don’t know how, so they chase away those they love with the hurtful words of their mouths.  They may have never learned compassion or how to handle themselves around others.  They hurt others because they hurt inside and out.  The pain becomes too intense whether physically, mentally, or spiritually, that they are crying out from the pain, but a lot of us don’t see this and all we see is the mean and bitter ways that they are dealing with every day.  People need help with this and we should try our best to help them, without joining them in their losing battle.

To overcome the cycle we need to first, recognize that we have a problem with being bitter towards others.  This poison gives us unforgiveness, so it makes it hard for us to forgive and forget when someone has said or done something wrong against us.  The demon of bitterness is on a rampage to attack all believers and those who would be believers, to destroy them, so they turn their eyes to themselves trying to cure their problem, instead of turning their eyes on God for help.

We as Christians can stop this bitterness by choosing to forgive by asking  God to help us to forget any evil doings or words that have been spoken from our daily thoughts.  Love one another, do not fight amongst each other, and learn to walk as Christ did by looking at people with kindness in your heart.

Romans 12:14-21 (NKJV)

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

We need not let something like bitterness into our lives.  Listen and heed to the words of God on this, by following His word.  Let the fruit of the Spirit of kindness engulf your soul so that you can have the compassion that is needed to walk in love without hate in your life.  The devil is out to destroy us in this area, in every way possible, so we must take up the Armor of God, praying to stop the enemy in his path, knowing that we are overcomers and in Christ, we have already won this battle.

Let’s Pray:

Heavenly Father-

We humbly come before your throne and ask for forgiveness for allowing any bitterness to come into our lives.  We ask in the name of Jesus that anyone we hold bad thoughts against, that You will help us to forgive them, by taking away all those memories that continue to go through our minds.  Now we command in the Name of Jesus that the bitterness inside of us will be gone and cast down into the abyss to never return.  We ask also that Your holy angels be around us to help us and protect us from any harm that tries to come back into our lives, in the name of Jesus. We also ask for this protection upon our families and our loved ones.  For you have given Your angels charge over us.  Keep us on the path of love, guide us into your ways, and lead us in our everyday walk.    In Jesus’ Name, we pray!  AMEN!!

May the peace of God go with you and may His light shine upon you.  May you be blessed with His lovingkindness, mercy, and grace.  If you have any questions or need someone to speak with, please email me at iamhomeministry@gmail.com.  I am here for anyone who needs prayer or just someone to speak with.  You may also visit our ministry website at: www.iamhomeministry.org.
